Teeth may be removed if they’re damaged beyond repair. Other possible reasons include impacted wisdom teeth or baby teeth that fail to fall out on their own.
There are two types of extractions. First is the simple extraction and second is the complex or surgical extraction.
You may need to be examined and have X-rays taken prior to your tooth extraction. Your dentist needs to see the position of your tooth and other internal structures that may be affected during the removal. Your dentist may also prescribe antibiotics to be taken before or after the procedure if you have existing medical conditions. Be sure to follow pre-surgery instructions provided to you.
If you have dental fears or anxiety, your dentist may offer oral sedation. If you’ll be undergoing a complex tooth extraction, your oral surgeon may use deep sedation or general anesthesia. Your dental team will be monitoring you closely to ensure your comfort. Let them know if you begin to experience pain during the procedure.
It’s normal to experience discomfort after getting a tooth extracted. Take your medications as advised by your dentist.
To relieve pain and swelling, you may apply ice packs on the outside of your cheek where the extracted tooth is. You need to avoid using a straw, spitting, or sucking to prevent a condition called dry socket.
Dry socket happens when a blood clot at the site of the extracted tooth is dislodged or dissolved before the wound heals. Contact your dentist if bleeding, pain, or swelling persists after several days.
WE OFFER ORAL AND IV SEDATION FOR COMPLICATED CASES
Simple tooth extractions are preferred unless the only method suitable for your case is a surgical extraction. If you need a tooth or teeth pulled, please get in touch with our team at (403) 257-1180.
